Azulejos of Portugal

First brought to the Iberian Peninsula during 500 years of North African rule, Azulejos (from the Arabic az-zulayj meaning “polished stone”) have been a key part of Portuguese architectural design for much of the past 600+ years.  The decorative tiles can be found adorning the interior and exterior walls of houses, churches, and palaces alike.

For this series, I have tapped into my Iberian heritage by curating images of weathered and aging azulejos from throughout Portugal and applying them to create a unique line of cups, mugs and jewelry to celebrate the centuries old art form.
